Synopsis
Motivated by a long-time absence of validated IP-based network simulation and some critical drawbacks in the existing ones, Visualized IP-based Network
Simulator (VINS) is designed and developed as a packet-level and discrete eventdriven simulator aimed at protocol stack behavioral analysis, visualization and performance prediction. VINS' static model is based on a number of important
Internet RFCs and the implementation in 4.4BSD kernel. Its simulation scenarios are constructed with fully autonomous nodes and applications to handle nondeterministic events in Network and Transport Layers. Each node has a 32-bit address, input queue, routing table and a set of service routines; applications are hosted by the nodes and exchange dynamically sized Protocol Data Unit in fullduplex mode. Current Transport Layer modules include UDP and TCP of different variations such as Tahoe, Reno and New-Reno. Statistics can be obtained on node, flow and application levels. As a new tool for IP-based network research and engineering, VINS provides a consistent big picture and as well a deep insight into today's Internet technologies, challenges and opportunities
